COMAND Compost Top Dressing in Polk County

Feed the soil, hold the water, cut the fertilizer

What COMAND Is

COMAND is a specialty top-dressing compost made by LifeSoils. It is produced with a controlled composting process that keeps the finished product rich in the microbes and organic matter that sandy Florida soils are short of. Independent Aeration Services is a COMAND provider for Lakeland and Polk County: we bring it in, apply it at the depth your lawn needs, and brush it into the turf so it goes to work in the root zone instead of sitting on top.

Most lawns around here sit on sand. Sand drains fast, holds little water and gives roots almost nothing to feed on. Adding organic matter is the one change that fixes all three at once.

Why It Saves Water

Organic matter behaves like a sponge in the soil. When COMAND is worked into a sandy lawn it raises the water-holding capacity of the root zone while still letting water soak in quickly. The practical result is a lawn that goes longer between waterings, stays greener through dry spells, and wastes less irrigation to runoff and deep drainage.

  • Less irrigation. The soil keeps more of each watering where roots can reach it.
  • Less fertilizer. Compost feeds the lawn slowly and helps hold nutrients that sand would otherwise let wash through.
  • Better wear and stress tolerance. A living, well-fed root zone recovers faster from heat, traffic and drought.
  • Healthier soil biology. COMAND restores the microbial activity that breaks down thatch and cycles nutrients.

How Much to Apply: Quarter Inch or Half Inch

Top dressing is measured by depth, and we apply COMAND in more than one amount depending on what the lawn needs and what the budget allows. The two depths we quote most often:

  • Quarter inch (1/4″): the affordable top dressing. A light, even layer that disappears into the turf within a few mowings. This is the right choice for a lawn in fair condition that needs a yearly boost of organic matter, or as the follow-up application in a SoilTrack program.
  • Half inch (1/2″): the substantial top dressing. Twice the material, applied in two passes. This is for lawns that are thin, sandy, compacted or newly aerated and need a real change in the root zone. It is also the depth we recommend for the first application in a soil restoration.

Both depths can be combined with core aeration on the same visit, which lets the compost drop straight into the aeration holes and reach several inches into the soil profile. Ask us which depth fits your lawn when you request a quote.

Applied Cleanly, Where It Belongs

Compost only helps if it lands on the lawn. We apply COMAND with an Earth & Turf 415SP stand-on topdresser that meters the material in a controlled 48-inch band, so the product goes onto the turf and not onto the street, the driveway, the curb or your flower beds. Track the Difference With SoilTrack

A COMAND program is easiest to judge with numbers. Our SoilTrack program tests your soil before treatment, at six months and at twelve months, with a follow-up COMAND application at month nine and a final test at eighteen months, so you can see the organic matter and nutrient levels change instead of guessing.
